I had a really weird experience in the writing of this article that I wanted to share with you because I think you'll be able to relate to it at some level.

We get to this time of the year and I start thinking..."OK. What's on the agenda for next year".

You know, the usual background thought processes that, in one way or another, end up becoming a New Year's resolution of some description.

Suddenly it occurred to me that at this same time last year, I had exactly the same experience and began thinking about the outcomes that we got as a result.

The surprising thing is that the outcomes we experienced were not all that different to those of previous years. Sure, they were fine, but the problem was that they were also kind of predictable.

Our brain likes it when things are the same. But, we learn when things are different

Now, if you're anything like me, and if I were a betting man, I'd say that "predictable" is probably one of the last things you want to be remembered for. Reliable maybe. Predictable? Certainly not.

I read something recently that suggested the only way we learn is by doing different things. The biggest difficulty we have is that we prefer to do the same thing. It's the way our brain likes it.

Make your News Years Resolution Count

Now, you may have done this before. (Or maybe you know someone who has)? You make a New Year's resolution to go to the gym or exercise every morning. You're doing fine for about three weeks and then, around January 23rd, at 6:00am when the alarm sounds, what do you do?

You hit the snooze button and say to yourself, "Just another 10 minutes".

Pretty soon you've set the alarm clock back to a more reasonable time and your New Year's resolution's out the window.

So, make 2008 different. It doesn't need to be radical. It just has to be a change you want to make to improve your business. You probably recognise that you have some unused capacity that you have not turned to your advantage and this is a great time to evaluate where that unused capacity can be focused.

...what we have today is the result of the decisions we made yesterday...what we end up with tomorrow is the result of the decisions we make today.

Commit to learning something new and recognise that whilst you're making these changes, you'll likely become your own worst enemy. You may even notice yourself constantly trying to maintain the status quo and, in some cases, actively resisting the change.

But I urge you, each time you do notice yourself reaching for the snooze button, or whatever it is that causes you to revert to the old way of doing things, that you STOP and reach for the volume control instead. And turn it up. Really crank it up and experience that same feeling of excitement you experienced on New Year's Eve when you first resolved that 2008 will be different... Excitingly different.

2008 will be different...Excitingly different

Why? Because when we do something different we learn. And when we learn we grow.

And because we believe that you, like us, want the best from your business.

Join me on New Year's Eve in saying goodbye to 2007. More importantly, as you're counting down to 2008 and you get to three, may you have a thought that will become the trigger for a dramatic growth in your business. Hold onto that thought for long enough for you to commit to it as you New Year's Resolution.

It is said that what we have today is the result of the decisions we made yesterday. And, what we end up with tomorrow is the result of the decisions we make today.
